A few years ago, smartphones designed specifically for gaming would not have made sense at all. Not because mobile technology was not advancement, but because the type of games available at that time on the mobile platforms were simply not convincing enough for anyone to make the switch.
However, with games like Fortnite, and PUBG gaining tractionin the market, and finally releasing on all major mobile platforms, it finallymakes sense why people are now moving towards smartphone gaming.
Believe it or not, gaming on your smartphone is a lot more convenient than you might think. All you need is a good internet connection, and you can earn as many chickendinners or victory royales that you like.
With that said, in this list, we are going to be looking at the best gaming smartphones that you can buy. Be it an Android, or an iOS device, we would be covering both. A few years ago, this list would have looked boring, but now with smartphones that are built specifically for gamers, we have some interesting offerings available in this list.
So, let’s not digress, and start looking at all the options that are available in the market.
Asus ROG Phone – Best Gaming Phone (Editor’s Choice)
Asus is no stranger when it comes to releasing some of the highest end products in the market. The company is known for releasing some amazing hardware back and forth. They already have an impressive portfolio of phones, however, seeing an ROG phone was something that surprised me. ROG was always the sub-brand that Asus reserved for some of the fanciest, highest end products.
Make no mistake; the ROG Phone is nothing short of fancy orhigh end. With top of the line specs, Asus Aura RGB lighting to boot, and looksthat would put all the modern smartphones to shame. However, aside from thedesign elements, the Asus ROG Phone is certainly better than sum of its parts, everything about this phone is great.
The performance is among the finest, andthe display is just gorgeous. However, the most surprising factor is the cameraarray, which is actually great. Additionally, the phone offers some level ofmodularity as well, you can attach a module which comes with a fan to keep thethermals low, as well as a headphone jack, and a Type-C port. Talk about addingvalue.
The only thing this phone lacks is good battery life.
To be honest, there is not a lot to dislike about the AsusROG Phone. If you are the type of person who prefers being yourself with nocare in the world about what others, think of you.
This is the phone for you,and I can assure you that you are going to turn heads with the beauty of thisphone. I would just suggest you that if you wish to game while you are on thego, do carry a power bank with you because it drains the battery a lot.
- Exceptional performance.
- Great list of features.
- Gorgeous, outlandish design.
- Beautiful screen.
- Great cameras.
- The battery life is mediocre at best.
Razer Phone 2 – Best Phone for Razer Fans
When Razer introduced the first Razer phones, it took the world by surprise, but when you realise that there are so many gamers who are playing games on their phones, it is only fair that Razer wants to take a piece of that pie from the market. The original Razer Phone had a lot of things good but it was still a bit dated.
In comes the Razer Phone 2; a fully packed phone with ChromaLighting in the logo, and one of the best screens that you could find on aphone; it has HDR support, and 120 Hz refresh rate as well. One of the fastestin the market.
Additionally, the 5.7 inch screen is perfect for all sorts ofcontent, and considering how it is using 16:9 aspect ratio, you will not haveany weird angles, or colour shifts.
The phone also comes with great speakerspowered by Dolby Atmos that will make things much better for you. Last but not the least, the battery life is decent as well, and you won’t have any problemspowering through an entire day.
On the flipside, there are some concerns I would like to address. For starters, the 16:9 aspect ratio is definitely respectable by a lot of people, but at the same time, it feels old, and outdated. Additionally, the Razer Phone 2 lacks a headphone jack, despite being a gaming phone, for the gamers.
Overall, the Razer Phone 2 is a great option that you can invest in. The good news about this phone is that it is better as a whole than sum of its parts. But the lack of headphone jack can be a concern for many users who are looking for the full package.
- Beautiful, responsive screen.
- Great battery life.
- Amazing audio.
- Streamlined design.
- There is no headphone jack.
- 16:9 aspect ratio.
Samsung Galaxy Note 9 – Best Overall Phone
When Samsung launched the Galaxy Note 9, they also brought some exclusive Fortnite skins with it. That move was enough to establish that mobile gaming is here, and it is here to stay. With that out of the way, the Samasung Galaxy Note 9 is packed with all the latest, and greatest hardware to boot, making it amazing for gaming.
For starters, the 6.4-inch super AMOLED screen is among themost gorgeous screens that we have used till date. Additionally, the phone isan absolute powerhouse; I tested PUBG and Fortnite on maxed out settings, andit went through both of them without any issues whatsoever.
If you are someonewho likes to play a lot of games, you are going to need a good battery life, thankfully, the battery life on the Galaxy Note 9 is amazing. Additionally, youhave a lot of fast storage to boot, and if you are concerned with the camera,it is one of the best you can find in any smartphone in both low light, andnatural light.
There are not a lot of bad things to be honest. But since we are reviewing this phone from the gamer’s perspective, the screen only offers 60Hz refresh rate. However, it does not matter a lot since very few games support refresh rate above 60Hz.
Overall, the Galaxy Note 9 is the best you can buy. It has everything you would want from a gaming smartphone minus a faster refresh rate screen. However, this should not be a problem as the phone is still a great performer whether you are gaming on it or just using it as your daily driver.
- Exceptional performance.
- Great, solid design.
- Beautiful screen.
- Amazing battery life.
- Top of the line storage.
- The S-Pen is amazing.
- Great camera in all lighting conditions.
- The phone does not have a higher refresh rate screen.
Sony Xperia XZ2 – Best Budget Option
Sony is not shy of flexing their gaming muscles when push comes to shove. They have made a mark in the console market. However, Sony’s mobile division has been suffering for some time now, but the Sony Xperie XZ2 aims to change that by doing a lot of things right.
For starters, the phone offers haptic feedback that comes inthe form of dynamic vibration system, meaning that the force of the feedback willchange upon the intensity of the action or the lack of it thereof. The phonealso offers studio speakers, which are brilliant in creating the bestsoundscape, and the performance is brilliant as well thanks to top of the linespecs.
Gaming performance remains amazing and without any hiccups. The phoneoffers 4K HDR recording as well, something that is missing from the majority ofphones in the market. Sony has also done a pretty good job with the camera, sothere is nothing to worry about in terms of that.
Honestly, at the current price tag, there are not a lot of things that are wrong with the phone. However, from the gamer’s perspective, there might not be much. Still, does not make this phone a slouch in terms of sheer performance, and features. Another odd thing about the phone was the fact that Sony is only offering 4GB of RAM in their flagship phone.
Overall, the Sony Xperia XZ2 is a right step in the direction, here is to hoping that it does good for Sony’s mobile division. The phone does check a lot of boxes for both the gamers, and those who are looking for exceptional performance, and good photography options as well.
- The performance in games, and outside games remain exceptional.
- Great screen that is gorgeous.
- Good build quality.
- Dynamic vibration system is definitely not a gimmick.
- The stereo sound is one of the best.
- Only 4GB RAM.
iPhone XS Max – Best iOS Phone
The last phone on the list is for those who belong to the Apple camp, and before I proceed, there is nothing wrong with that either. iPhones are great, and while Apple’s recent iPhone XS Max might be an iterative upgrade, it is great for those who look for the best possible performance, and most importantly, best for those who want a bigger screen.
The first thing about this phone that will awe is thegorgeous display. It is 6.5-inch of absolute gorgeousness, and becoming thetallest offering in the market. Additionally, the specs are powerful, while thephone looks the same as the iPhone X, only taller, but all the upgrades areunder the hood.
As far as the performance is concerned, no matter what youthrow at this phone, it will handle it and give you impressive performancenumbers as well. Apple has also done a great job with offering a lot of storageoptions, so you really do not have anything to worry about when it comes to theperformance. Last but not the least, Apple also upgraded the cameras on thephone, so you really do not have to worry about not being able to take stunningphotos.
On the flipside, there is nothing that is largely wrong with the phone itself. Aside from the fact that you do not get some of the gamer oriented features. But considering how Apple never marketed this phone as a gaming device, it is completely fine.
Overall, the Apple iPhone XS Max is the best from Apple yet. It is not only powerful, but it also looks good, and it finally resolves the issue of Apple users not having a bigger, and taller phone. Needless to say, it is an absolute powerhouse.
- Powerful regardless of the task it handles.
- Brilliant optimization.
- Great cameras.
- Good battery life.
- Solid build quality.
- No gamer specific features.
Finding the right phone for gaming is not a difficult job. Especially when you take into the account that you can pick up any phone in the market with powerful enough specs, you can easily get the best gaming performance.
However, the trend of gamer oriented features is slowly taking off, and while we might not see such phones from the industry leaders, Asus and Razer are doing their best with Xiaomi bringing in their phone as well.
The best gaming phone is definitely the Asus ROG Phone atthe moment. However, it is a tough call, since the same list has Galaxy Note 9,and iPhone XS Max. In conclusion, it all boils down to the preferences. If youare looking for a pure gaming phone, then nothing can bit the Asus ROG Phonesimply because of the gamer oriented features it has.
However, if you arelooking for the best overall phone, then you can either go for the SamsungGalaxy Note 9 if you like Android, or you can go for the Apple iPhone XS Max ifyou are an Apple user. Both phones will not do you wrong in any way.
